Estefany's Birth Story

Estefany's Birth Story

It was a little after 3:30 am when I woke up with contractions. After several days of prodromal labor and false alarms, I was hesitant to call anyone right away so I began timing the contractions. They continued to intensify and become increasingly difficult to breathe through. I woke up Fabio around 4:30 am when I realized the contractions were coming every 2-3 minutes and lasting 35-45 seconds. He contacted our doula, Aida, and planned for her to bring the replacement pool. Fabio filled the tub for me in the meantime. A little after 5 am he reached out to our midwives, Val and Nicole, after speaking with Nicole on the phone she decided it was time to head over. I got into the shower but the water was too cold and transitioned to the tub. I had a couple of contractions in the tub and got really cold so with Fabio's help, I made it over to the bed. A couple of mins later around 6 am, Aida arrived. She asked me how I was feeling and if I had the urge to push yet and I said no. Immediately after I had another contraction and felt the baby drop and the urge to push. Fabio immediately went to call the midwives. In the next contraction my body pushed the baby's head out and before I could understand what was happening, the entire body emerged at 6:11 am. I laid back with my baby on my chest as Fabio quickly came back into the room. Together, we looked to see that it was a little girl! Nicole arrived a few mins later and examined the baby and me and helped me position the baby for the breast crawl. With a little tug, I delivered my placenta about 45 mins later. I had immense after-birth contractions but overall felt so much better this time around! The entire birth team was extremely supportive in my recovery, particularly with breastfeeding. I am so grateful to Nicole for the care that I received -- she came to visit numerous times and hopped on Facetime any time I needed. It has made my postpartum so much better!
